Strawberries in Winter

Original Script by: Mrs. Evelyn Merritt

Music Composition & Music Direction: David Kolenda

I wrote music for Bishop Fenwick High School's Production of Strawberries, which was performed in February/March 2026 at the METG's High School Drama Festival. This script was heavily based on the Slavic folk tale The Twelve Months by Aleksander Chodźko. To further evoke this Slavic theme, I wrote music using an instumentation and characteristics similar to traditional Slavic folk music.

The band from Strawberries in Winter

Though I wrote for a slightly different orchestration, the band was comprised of the following instruments:

- Keyboard (played by the conductor)
- Accordion
- Treshchotka
- Claves
- Tambourine
- Mark Tree
Additionally, I wrote lyrics for the ensemble to sing during the performance, which were translated into Ukranian by a friend who is fluent. In the show, the band accompanied the singers, and also underscored key moments.

During the rehearsal process, I taught the lyrics to the ensemble, and taught many of the band members how to play their instruments. I also worked alongside our choreographer, Abby Rice, to ensure that my music was fit to be danced to, and made modifications to simplify choreographing.

For Freedom!

Original Script by: John W. Reilly

Music Composition: David Kolenda & John W. Reilly

Music Direction & Production: David Kolenda

I was a co-composer of For Freedom!, a 15-minute play produced at Bishop Fenwick High School's 2026 student-written play festival, Let Freedom Ring. During the show, prerecorded tracks underscored key moments, and the show concluded with a sung number, which had a live vocalist and a prerecorded backing track.

I ran recording sessions and produced the final tracks, and John oversaw and gave feedback during recording sessions. All instruments were recorded live. The players are as follows:

- Pipe Organ: David Kolenda
- Accordion: David Kolenda
- Trumpet: John W. Reilly
- Guitars: David Kolenda, John W. Reilly
- Flute: Sadie Fountain
